The Newborn Infant Physical Examination, NIPE, is a detailed clinical examination carried out in the first 72 hours after birth. It checks for conditions that may not be immediately obvious at birth, including heart abnormalities, developmental hip dysplasia, eye conditions and, for male babies, undescended testes

As a NIPE-qualified midwife, I carry out this examination at home. There’s no rushing, no waiting, and no hospital car park. You can ask every question you have, and I will explain everything I find. If anything requires follow-up, I will guide you through exactly what happens next.

If you’d like a postnatal check for yourself at the same appointment, I am happy to do that too. Your recovery matters as much as your baby’s wellbeing, and having that check carried out by someone who knows you, in your own home, is something I’m pleased to offer.
