What is NIPT?
Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) is a simple blood test that looks at fragments of your baby’s DNA in your bloodstream. It screens for:
Down’s syndrome (Trisomy 21)
Edwards’ syndrome (Trisomy 18)
Patau’s syndrome (Trisomy 13)
(Optional: Baby’s biological sex)
NIPT is over 99% accurate for Down’s syndrome and carries no risk to you or your baby.
What’s Included
Your 1-hour appointment includes:
Ultrasound scan with Emma – to confirm your pregnancy is between 10+2 and 21+6 weeks
Pre-test counselling with Tracy – to explain the test, what it screens for, and what the results could mean
NIPT blood test – taken during your appointment (if you are at the right gestation)
Follow-up phone call with Tracy – with your results within 5 working days, plus time to ask questions
How Does It Compare to NHS Combined Screening?
Unlike the standard NHS combined screening test (which includes a scan and blood test and is around 85–90% accurate), NIPT offers:
Greater accuracy (99%+ for Down’s syndrome)
Fewer false positives, reducing unnecessary stress
Earlier reassurance, available from 10+2 weeks of pregnancy
